How did you get into the insurance broking industry?
I studied Law and Commerce at University. I started out as a lawyer before deciding to try something else. I didn’t want to commit to the legal sector until I’d experienced another profession. I applied for a role as an Insurance Officer at Comcover (in Canberra), the Federal Government’s self-managed insurance fund. I was exposed to broking, underwriting, claims management and risk management in that role and never looked back.
What is something about working in insurance that has surprised you?
The diversity of experiences I’ve had. I’ve been fortunate to travel to London and New York through work and have been on site visits through countless businesses and facilities, including cutting edge manufacturing and research facilities. I’ve even walked through a maximum-security prison in New Zealand!
What do you like doing when you are not at work?
I like getting away with my family for the odd weekend or holiday… I love a good road trip.
FIVE QUICKFIRE FAVOURITES:
1) Favourite movie?
This is one of those ‘depends on my mood’ questions. I’ll pick one… Gladiator
2) Favourite animal?
Not sure about ‘favourite’ but I’ll say Orcas… or perhaps my black cavoodle, Benji (he can be just as ferocious – nowhere near as dangerous)
3) Favourite food?
Can’t go past a well prepared and cooked lamb on the spit
4) Favourite holiday destination?
Greek islands
5) Favourite karaoke song?
It’s been a long time since I sung karaoke… but the first song that came to mind was ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’ by U2
